The BLA was formed in the 1970’s, to resist prosecution of black lawyers who practised law in the Central Business Districts of the then "white towns", under the infamous Group Areas Act No.35 of 1966.
Today, the Black Lawyers Association strives to protect the rights and interests of all its members, irrespective of colour, race, gender or creed, to protect and advance human rights, civil liberties and the Rule of Law in South Africa, and to actively participate in creating a non racial, non sexist judicial system and society in South Africa. |
