The participation quota is a number that expresses how big one section is in relation to all the other sections in a sectional title scheme.

The last page of every sectional title plan is a participation quota schedule, which sets out the participation quota for each section in the sectional title scheme. The law sticks to this participation quota schedule, even if errors in the participation quota lists can be proven later, until such time as the participation quota schedule is amended according to the procedures set out in the Sectional Titles Act.

The participation quota is used to calculate the financial contribution each owner has to make to the communal funds of the body corporate. Levies are calculated according to participation quota. The participation quota (in terms of sectional title property) can be calculated by dividing the floor area of a section by the sum of the floor areas for all the sections in the sectional title scheme.

The Sectional Titles Act requires the participation quotas to be expressed as a percentage. So we will have to multiply our current answer by 100 and use the '%' notation.

The Sectional Titles Act also requires the participation quota to be accurate to four decimal places, so remember to give four decimal places after the decimal point. And remember that the fifth figure gets rounded off to the nearest ten thousandth.
