An ante-nuptial contract is an agreement between two people, which they enter into BEFORE marriage. An ante-nuptial contract sets out what assets the parties bring to the union, what the parties agree will happen to those seperate estates once they are wed, and very importantly, what will happen to those estates at the end of the marriage (in the event of death or divorce).

An ante-nuptial contract may sometimes specify that assets acquired during the marriage will accrue to both estates.

Ante-nuptial contracts get lodged with the local Deeds Registry within six months of signing it before a Notary Public.

An ante-nuptial contract is also often referred to as a pre-nuptial contract.
