Johannesburg has an extremely well developed higher education system of both private and public universities. The public University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg serve Johannesburg.
University of Johannesburg
The Rand Afrikaans University, Technikon Witwatersrand, and Vista University were merged to form the University of Johannesburg on 1 January 2005. The new university offers education primarily in English and Afrikaans, although courses may be taken in any of South Africa's official languages.
University of the Witwatersrand
The University of the Witwatersrand is one of the leading universities in South Africa. Wits University was a famous centre of resistance to apartheid and students opposed efforts to enforce segregation in universities, earning it the nickname "Moscow on the Hill".
Private Universities
Private universities include Midrand University in Midrand and Monash University, which has one of its eight campuses in Johannesburg.
